R.I.P. Leonard Cohen

“How do we produce work that touches the heart? We don’t want to live a frivolous life, we don’t want to live a superficial life. We want to be serious with each other, with our friends, with our work. That doesn’t necessarily mean gloomy or grim, but serious has a kind of voluptuous aspect to it. It is something that we are deeply hungry for, to take ourselves seriously and to be able to enjoy the nourishment of seriousness, that gravity, that weight.”
–from a 1995 interview

NATIVE POVERTY IN BC IS SEVERE

In 2010, Canada was one of the few

countries to refuse to sign the

United Nations Declaration

on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Signing the UNDRIP would have caused to be

adopted minimal standards of human rights

of Indigenous Peoples, which would have

supported strong First Nations governments,

economies, families and communities,

and ultimately benefitted all Canadians.

Where does one go?

During the 2010 Olympics

restaurants and bars

graciously opened their restrooms

for general use by all of the public

whereas before these had been restricted

to paying customers.

In Memoriam – Harriet Nahanee (Tsibeotl) 1935 – 2007

This abusive treatment

of these elder women of two races

speaks of racist, misogynist, senior-hating

rank discrimination that one

would typically expect from a government

which is in thrall to big business,

is primarily motivated by love of money,

is totally uninterested in equality,

and is therefore anti-democratic.

Some Effects of Anger

Anger promotes discrimination;

well-off comfy-womfy people

look down on panhandlers

look down on binners

look down on sex trade workers

look down on drug addicts

look down on poor people—

it’s so nice to have someone to blame

for the failings of your economic system.

On Being Saved and Defeating Possession

“There’s solace in life immortal

That’s the saving of us all

Knowing that with God’s love you’re one

Something you fought hard for and won”

Charles Taylor, A Secular Age, p. 531:

“…the fate of belief depends much more

than before on powerful intuitions of individuals,

radiating out to others. And these intuitions

will be far from self-evident to others again.

To some, including many believers, this epochal

development will seem like a regression of Christianity.”

But, p. 535: “Knowledge, morality, art,

government and the economy should become

religious, but freely and from inside, not

by compulsion from outside.” (italics mine)
